Baptism at Open Door Baptist Church

What is baptism?

Baptism is the total immersion of the body in water in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.

Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV)

Who should be baptized?

Acts 2:41 (NKJV)

Why should believers be baptized?

  1. As an act of obedience — God commands us to be baptized. Acts 2:38 says, “Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”
  2. Because Jesus was baptized as our example. When Jesus was baptized he prefigured His death, burial and resurrection for us. He became identified with sinners when He was baptized. When we are baptized, we become publicly identified with Him. Matthew 3:13-16 says, “Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?’ But Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then he allowed Him. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.”
  3. As an open, public declaration of our faith in Christ and His great work for us. Matthew 10:32 says, “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.” And Romans 10:11 says, “For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.’

Does baptism help people to be saved?

No. Only those already saved should be baptized. Baptism does not wash away sins or help a person to be saved. Baptism is a symbolic act.

Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

Romans 6:3-6 (NKJV)

Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.

Acts 10:47-48a (NKJV)

What does baptism symbolize or picture?

Baptism symbolizes two things, mentioned in Romans 6:3-6 above.

  1. It pictures the gospel. The gospel is the good news of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ for sinners. When the baptism candidate is put down in the water, they picture the fact that Christ died and was buried for them. When the baptism candidate is raised out of the water, they picture the fact that Christ was raised from the dead for them.
  2. It pictures the fact that when we took Christ as our Savior, we died to our old life of sin and became a new creature in Christ. When the baptism candidate is put down in then water, they picture that their life has been raised from a life of sin to a new life in Christ.

When should a person be baptized?

As soon after they are saved as possible. In the Bible, people who were saved were baptized shortly thereafter.

Then those who gladly[a] received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

Acts 2:41 (NKJV)

But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

Acts 8:12 (NKJV)
